Maths & English (Functional Skills) Level 2

Level 2 course pass; is similar to having a GCSE @ grade C.

OPTION 1 (FREE with any Access to HE Course taken with Ixion College)

All our Access to Higher Education courses (and our QCF Teaching Assistant Courses) have an inclusive option to take a refresher course in Functional Skills (Level 2 for English & Maths), that is also Distance Learning based.

FREE when part of one of our Access to HE Courses:

NOTE: You MUST check that your preferred University will accept these Level 2 courses instead of GCSE’s, as NOT every University accepts them as alternatives to GCSE’s.

FREE Maths & English (level 2) courses are included in your main Access to HE course package (and QCF Teaching Assistant Courses).

It is our experience that those learners who did NOT achieve GCSE (Grade C or above) WILL BENEFIT from including this in their overall choice of course, so select your course carefully if you want to include these extra courses too. You will need to complete them too though to get your Access to HE course or QCF course if you choose this option!

You will be sent course specific virtual learning environment (VLE) access Course codes/details, as they run as separate VLE courses from your Access to HE course and you may be allocated different tutors too, for each speciality.

When taking these courses (WITHOUT signing up at the same time and then taking at the same time an Access to HE course) with Ixion College.

The aims of these qualifications are to develop learner understanding and skills in:

1. Representing:

  • Selecting the mathematics and information to model a solution.

  • Learners decide on the methods, operations and tools, including ICT, to use in a situation.
  • Learners select the mathematical information to use.

  • Learners examine patterns and relationships.
  • Learners change values and assumptions or adjust relationships to see the effects on answers in models.

1 Speaking, listening and communication

Make a range of contributions to discussions in a range of contexts, including those that are unfamiliar, and make effective presentations

  • Consider complex information and give a relevant, cogent response in appropriate language
  • Present information and ideas clearly and persuasively to others
  • Adapt contributions to suit audience, purpose and situation
  • Make significant contributions to discussions, taking a range of roles and helping to move discussion forward

2 Reading

Select, read, understand and compare texts and use them to gather information, ideas, arguments and opinions

  • Select and use different types of texts to obtain and utilise relevant information
  • Read and summarise, succinctly, information/ideas from different sources
  • Identify the purposes of texts and comment on how meaning is conveyed
  • Detect point of view, implicit meaning and/or bias
  • Analyse texts in relation to audience needs and consider suitable responses
  • In three or more texts.

3 Writing

Write a range of texts, including extended written documents, communicating information, ideas and opinions, effectively and persuasively.

  • Present information/ideas concisely, logically, and persuasively
  • Present information on complex subjects clearly and concisely
  • Use a range of writing styles for different purposes
  • Use a range of sentence structures, including complex sentences, and paragraphs to organise written communication effectively
  • Punctuate written text using commas, apostrophes and inverted commas accurately
  • Ensure written work is fit for purpose and audience, with accurate spelling and grammar that support clear meaning in a range of text types.


Not all Universities accept these Level 2 courses instead of GCSE’s, so you MUST check with your chosen University is they will accept them in place of GCSE’s BEFORE you embark on any Ixion College Course that includes these Level 2 Maths & English Functional Skills courses.

45 guided learning hours for Maths and 45 hours for English.

Typically these courses will take 3 to 6 months to complete

Students learn through an English & Maths e-book completing activities in line with the syllabus. The tutor will feed back and guide learners in developing their skills.

A formal exam is taken when the Tutor & Student agree they are ready. The exam is a pass or fail. It can be re-taken if needed and additional support provided.

There is 1 online (or paper based) exam for Maths.

There is 1 online (or paper based) exam for Reading

There is 1 online (or paper based) exam for Writing

There is also an online observed (or recorded) group discussion and presentation for speaking and listening.

On successful completion of these courses you will receive a Level 2 Certificate for each of these: Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening and Mathematics.

However, you are then expected and agreeing to finish both courses guided learning hours for each and overseen by your Tutor, before you finish your main Access to HE course or QCF/NVQ course and before any Access to HE course or QCF /NVQ certificates are dispatched to you.
