The Access to Higher Education: Education Professions Diploma is a qualification which prepares people without traditional qualifications for typically a career in teaching /education and for study at university, particularly with a Literature focus and also a STEM teaching focus (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Therefore the Education Professions Diploma Syllabus is structured to include Literature & STEM curriculum areas, in order that you would know who to teach it.

This Access to Higher Education: Education Professions Diploma course is for people that have a passion for education, teaching and training and would like to go on to study on a Higher Education programme in e.g. teaching, training, mentoring and coaching degrees and/or Education. The Education Professions Diploma course provides the credits (entry qualifications) and skills to gain access to a university degree course.

The Education Professions Diploma is designed for:

  • Adults who may be returning to education, studying for the first time at college or wishing to change career;
  • Adults with a current or previous role working with children e.g. nursery assistant, teaching assistant, play worker or have an interest in teaching;
  • Adults who, because of social, educational or individual circumstances, were unable to participate in or benefit from initial education;
  • Adults from groups under-represented in higher education;
  • Adults seeking a change of direction because of unemployment or lack of career opportunities in their previous field and who have a demonstrable interest in entering a teaching related profession

Students who successfully complete this course will be awarded the Access to Higher Education: Education Professions Diploma

You will study a range of units, designed to cover the Literature and STEM subjects selected from the following subject areas: Education, English Language and Literature, Science, Numeracy and Psychological Theories plus a range of study skills and educational theory and practice.

Additional English and Maths modules are added FREE for students to achieve at Level 2 if you don’t already have GCSE’s at grade C or above. (See Syllabus for Maths & English courses: Level 2 – click here)

How will I learn?

Learning will be through Distance Learning. Your Access to Higher Education course will be delivered through online assessment using the latest Virtual Learning Environment technology, online one to one tutorials, group webinars and the opportunity to attend workshops scheduled throughout your course. You will be expected to typically commit to a minimum of 16 hours per week independent study to suit your personal circumstances. This is the recommended guideline to support you to achieve

Access to Higher Education: Education Professions Diploma

PLUS…Level 2 (Maths & English): Functional Skills (On successful completion of these courses you will receive a Level 2 Certificate for each of these: Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening and Mathematics)

Students primarily progress to Higher Education study in areas related to Teacher Training. These may include some of the following areas of Degree level study: Teaching, Education Studies, Early Years, Child Development and a range of related degrees.

The qualification is structured so that it meets the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education’s (QAA) Access to Higher Education specification requirements. All Access to Higher Education Diplomas are made up of units of assessment that amount to 60 credits.

The qualification’s 60 credits include 45 graded credits at level 3 that must be achieved from units that have academic subject content. The remaining 15 credits will be from “study skills” units that will both provide you with the skills to study the Access course and prepare you for study at Higher Education level.

  • 45 Credits at Level 3 from graded academic subject content
  • 15 Credits from ungraded units at levels 2 & 3

How will my work be assessed?

There are a range of assessment techniques for the subjects covered which may include assignments, online micro-teach sessions, online group work activity, vivas (oral examination), course related discussions with your tutor and research you have conducted and uploaded to the Virtual Learning Environment.

What can I do after this?

With the appropriate results at Level 3 you may be eligible to progress to a Higher Education programme in Teaching.

What Qualifications do I need to do this course?

No formal qualifications are required although some universities will ask for English and Maths at level 2. Applicants will complete an assessment in reading and writing to ensure that they are proficient enough to benefit from the level 3 content of this course.
