This Pearson BTEC Level 4 Education & Teaching Certificate (QCF) prepares trainee teachers and trainers to teach in a wide range of contexts. To achieve the qualification, there is a requirement for teaching practice that requires observation and assessment of performance. The qualification can meet the needs of a range of trainee teachers and trainers, including:

  • individuals who are not currently teaching and training but who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements of the qualification
  • individuals who are currently teaching and training, including those who have just begun teaching and training and who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements, of the qualification

Course Eligibility

There is no requirement for prior qualifications. All applications are assessed on an individual basis.

Learners are not required to have achieved a Level 3 Award in Education and Training before undertaking this qualification. However, some learners may already have achieved the Level 3 Award. If this is the case credit transfer will apply for the first unit in the Certificate, Understand Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships in Education and Training. The award is suitable for those who work, or intend to work, as:

  • Teachers in adult and community education
  • Teachers or trainers in the voluntary sector
  • Training personnel in commerce, industry, the public sector or HM Forces
  • Technicians and support staff in further and adult education. Students should normally have at least a Level 3 (i.e. A Level/Btec equivalent) qualification in the subject they wish to teach and have a reasonable command of English, Numeracy and IT.

What will I learn?

The Pearson BTEC Level 4 Education & Teaching Certificate (QCF) allows the inclusion of units developed for other qualifications, including competence units from the learning and development suite of qualifications. These units are appropriate alternatives for the many related roles undertaken by teachers, tutors and trainers, particularly in work-based learning.

How will I learn?

This qualification, accredited on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF), helps boost learners’ career prospects by giving them the skills, knowledge and understanding that employers look for. They also provide career development opportunities for those already in work
learners will be required to provide evidence that they can achieve the required teaching practice, i.e. 30 hours of practice. Any appropriate location for practice that will allow a trainee teacher to meet the required standards is permitted

How will my work be assessed?

There are a range of assessment techniques for the subjects covered which include online assignments using our Virtual Learning Environment, reflective accounts, witness testimonies, subject related discussions with your tutor and developing projects. These are all assessed at either pass or fail

What Qualifications do I need to do this course?

No formal qualifications are required. Just your drive and enthusiasm to take and finish the course.

  • Understand the teaching role and responsibilities in education and training.
  • Understand ways to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment.
  • Understand the relationships between teachers and other professionals in education and training.

2. Planning to Meet the Needs of Learners in Education and Training

  • Be able to use initial and diagnostic assessment to agree individual learning goals with learners.
  • Be able to plan inclusive teaching and learning in accordance with internal and external requirements.
  • Be able to implement the minimum core in planning inclusive teaching and learning.
  • Be able to evaluate own practice when planning inclusive teaching and learning.

3. Delivering Education and Training

  • Be able to use inclusive teaching and learning approaches with internal and external requirements.
  • Be able to communicate with students and other learning professionals to promote learning and progression.
  • Be able to use technologies in delivering inclusive teaching and learning.
  • Be able to implement the minimum core when delivering inclusive teaching and learning.
  • Be able to evaluate own practice in delivering inclusive Teaching and learning.

4. Assessing Learners in Education and Training

The course will give you a fundamental understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer in relation to legislation, equality, diversity, inclusivity and meeting the needs of learners. You will be able to use initial and diagnostic assessments and plan and deliver inclusive teaching and learning. You will also be able to assess learning and use appropriate resources to support effective learning.
