Maths Level 2 (NQF)

A Maths Level 2 pass is similar to having a GCSE @ grade C

Typically this Maths Level 2 (Functional Skills) course will take 3 to 6 months to complete

We work through the following steps:

  • An Initial Assessment
    • This is to find the level at which you are working.
  • A Diagnostic Assessment
    • This looks at different elements of the course and identifies which areas you are competent in and which areas require more work and extra help and support from our tutors

A successful learner will be able to:

  • Understand and use positive and negative numbers of any size in practical contexts
  • Carry out calculations with numbers of any size in practical contexts, to a given number of decimal places
  • Understand, use and calculate ratio and proportion, including problems involving scale
  • Understand and use equivalences between fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Understand and use simple formulae and equations involving one or two step operations
  • Recognise and use 2-D representations of 3-D objects
  • Find area, perimeter and volume of common shapes
  • Use, convert and calculate using metric and, where appropriate, imperial measures
  • Collect and represent discrete and continuous data, using information and communication technology (ICT) where appropriate
  • Use and interpret statistical measures, tables and diagrams, for discrete and continuous data, using information and communication technology (ICT) where appropriate
  • Use statistical methods to investigate situations
  • Use probability to assess the likelihood of an outcome.

    No prior knowledge, understanding, skills or qualifications are required before learners register for this qualification.

    There is no requirement for prior qualifications. All applications are assessed on an individual basis.

    What will I learn?

  • How will I learn?

    Your Maths Level 2 learning will be via Distance Learning. Your course will be delivered through online assessment using our latest Virtual Learning Environment, one to one tutorials with your Tutor (phone, e-mail & face-to-face Skype) and group web based webinars. (See Study Style)

    You will be expected to typically commit to a minimum of 12 hours per week independent study to suit your personal circumstances. This is the recommended guideline to support you to achieve

    A requirement for learners to apply their learning to actual events and activity within the sector.

    Qualifications

    Maths at Level 2 Functional Skills qualification (NQF)

    A Maths Level 2 course pass is similar to having a GCSE @ grade C (but first check with your preferred University, College or Employer that they accept this course as an alternative to a GCSE.)

    This qualification helps boost learners’ career prospects by giving them the skills, knowledge and understanding that employers and educators look for. They also provide career development opportunities for those already in work.

    How will my work be assessed?

    Students learn through Maths e-books and by completing activities in line with the syllabus. The tutor will support and give feed back and guide learners in developing their Maths skills.

    A formal exam is taken when the Tutor & Student agree they are ready. The exam is a pass or fail. It can be re-taken if needed and additional support provided.

    There is one online (or paper based) exam for Maths Level 2.

    There are a range of assessment techniques for the subjects covered which include online assignments using our Virtual Learning Environment, reflective accounts, witness testimonies, subject related discussions with your tutor and developing projects. These are all assessed at either pass or fail.

    • The qualification is externally assessed.
    • The test: will last for 1 hour and 30 minutes
    • Is marked out of 40
    • Provides an on screen calculator
    • Must be passed within 1 year of the start date
    • Is only available in English

    What Qualifications do I need to do this course?

    No formal qualifications are required. Just your drive and enthusiasm to take and finish the course.

    Whats Next

    Not all Universities accept these Level 2 courses instead of GCSE’s, so you MUST check with your chosen University if they will accept them in place of GCSE’s BEFORE you embark on any Ixion College Course and that includes this Maths Level 2 Functional Skills courses.
