This Edexcel Teaching Assistant course: Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools Diploma – Level 3 (QCF) combines knowledge and practice for those specialist support staff roles that directly support teaching and learning for students with special educational needs. The Level 3 Diploma recognises competence in both generic and specialist aspects of supporting teaching and learning in schools with particular emphasis for those learners with special needs in areas such as behaviour, emotional, social development, cognition and/or learning needs or physical disabilities.

Course Eligibility

In order to gather all evidence required to complete the qualification some work experience in a school will be required with learners who have special educational needs. It is anticipated that this would be between 3-5 hours per week for the duration of the course (or any combination of time spent in school that gives the same amount of time spent over the period of the course) and this experience must be arranged by you from; a school, or a pre or after school club. The time spent in the placement may influence the speed of your progress throughout the course. All applications are assessed on an individual basis.

(If not a charge of £100 for Maths & £100 for English will apply). Your tutor will provide you with personalised advice and guidance relating to your Maths and English needs.

FREE FREE DBS CHECK: As soon as we have received approval for your loan from the Student Loan Company and you have started your course, we will arrange and pay for your FREE Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check for you to secure your placement/ work experience hours and start to gather the evidence and experience needed to complete your course.

What will I learn?

This Edexcel Teaching Assistant course in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools Diploma – Level 3 (QCF) is a 44 credit qualification specialising in supporting learners with special educational needs. The course covers developing communication and professional relationships with learners and parents, encouraging learner personal development, promoting personal behaviours, supporting literacy and numeracy, safeguarding, health and safety, equality and diversity. The qualification emphasises special educational needs by developing the knowledge and understanding of how to support children and young people with behaviour, emotional, social development, cognition and learning needs and those with physical disabilities.

How will I learn?

Learning will be via Distance Learning. Your course will be delivered through online assessment using our latest Virtual Learning Environment, one to one tutorials with your Tutor (phone, e-mail & face-to-face Skype) and group web based webinars. (See Study Style)

You will be expected to typically commit to a minimum of 12 hours per week independent study to suit your personal circumstances. This is the recommended guideline to support you to achieve.

There is a requirement to be working or volunteering in a school based environment during your course

How will my work be assessed?

There are a range of assessment techniques for the subjects covered which include online assignments using our Virtual Learning Environment, reflective accounts, witness testimonies, subject related discussions with your tutor and developing projects. All assessments are either pass or fail.

What Qualifications or Work experience do I need to do this course?

Applicants must have, or be working towards the equivalent of, maths and English at GCSE grade C or above or be working towards a maths and/or English level 2 qualification which must be completed at the same time, or before, the end of the Diploma qualification.

Applicants also need the drive, commitment and enthusiasm to complete the Diploma successfully

Whats Next

A career as a teaching assistant: Complete our SEN Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning Level 3 qualification and doors will open for you to apply for a teaching assistant role within an e.g. infant or junior school, special school, nursery, secondary school or independent school.

Remember: You will NOT need to commence your Student Loan repayments if you earn less than £21,000 per year.

Get promoted: If you are already a Teaching Assistant able to work without supervision, you may be eligible for promotion to become a Senior or Higher Level Teaching Assistant, Senior Learning Support Assistant or Senior Special Educational Needs Assistant.

The Edexcel Level 3 qualifications in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (QCF) have been developed to give learners the opportunity to:

  • Engage in relevant learning which will provide opportunities to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and the essential successful working life attributes

Successful course completion will qualify learners to gain employment in a school setting, or consider progression to Higher Education on the Foundation Degree in Education & Care.
